My garden
I lay on the trampoline today looking up and this is what I saw. Very soon now the trampoline is going to turn into a gigantic bucket of leaves – they’ve already started falling – but I’d still rather have the trees. Here’s my garden produce on the dinner table tonight: Everything on that wooden chopping…

Can I outwit a slug?
I’ve been planting lots of seeds over the past month or so and they germinate and start to grow. But then something comes along, probably a slug, and demolishes it in one go. They don’t eat the weeds. Oh no. They leave the weeds and eat the thing I want. I’m not going to be…

The school garden
I spent most of my day off yesterday working in the school garden. Somehow it doesn’t look much better despite my best efforts. It’s just an ugly garden. Most of my time was spent removing a rogue bamboo which spreads faster than any other plant I’ve seen. I do like bamboo and I wouldn’t mind it…

Growing your own potatoes
In March this year a few of us spent a bit of time in the school garden, weeding and planting new plants. My friend put a few potatoes in a sack of dirt and left it. No-one at the school was remotely interested and I don’t think they even showed or discussed it with the…

How to have your photo taken
My sister, Susie, is here for the weekend and I took her out for lunch to the Foodstory café on Thursday (best café in Aberdeen) but she refused to let me take a photo of her. Why don’t people like having their photos taken? I love having my photo taken and I’m so good at it,…

Fitness goddess
I was cycling the kids home from school this afternoon and just made it to the top of a hill when a young man shouted out in a very exuberant and “look, there’s a flying pig!” kind of way, OH MY GOD! YOU MUST BE SO FIT! JESUS! I’m really not that fit but this put a smile…

Sunflowers and cucumbers
I have a sunflower at last! One of the flowers opened up in the rain today. It was one of the smaller, sickly-looking plants so I was not expecting to get a flower out of it at all but here it is with a bee hard at work. It’s lovely. We also picked our first cucumber today.…

What’s growing in my garden?
Gardens change dramatically with each season in this part of the world so I thought I’d post some more photos of my garden now that we’re well into summer. The last post like this was back in May. Last winter I scattered wildflower seeds in the garden and the annual cornflowers have just started flowering. I’ve never…

Bathtubs for the garden
I took this photo outside the front entrance to the 25Hours hotel in Vienna. I love that they’ve got old galvanised bathtubs filled with plants! They’ve also done a good job with the plants where the mix of colours, textures, and heights is pleasing to look at. Most hotel entrances are sterile places devoid of plant…

Blue poppies
Another Saturday and another children’s birthday party at Codona‘s by the beach in Aberdeen. Last Saturday we also went to a children’s birthday party at Codona’s and I found the bike ride there incredibly stressful. This Saturday I took a different route and it was just as hard. I even cycled the wrong way down a…

The gin verdict
This might be a little premature because I haven’t finished the treatment but so far, gin seems to be working well as a weapon against hair lice. I treated Elizabeth’s and my own hair twice last week. Then I did it again earlier this week, but just the once. I’ve been inspecting Elizabeth’s hair and haven’t…

What’s growing in my garden?
A couple of months ago I posted a photo of my newly planted tomato seedlings: Here they are today: One is a cherry tomato plant, hence the smaller size. I actually thought they were both cherry tomatoes but now I’m not so sure. There’s a bean shoot growing in there too. I’ve probably got too many…

We’ve got pets
I decided to start a wormery to feed the plants in the greenhouse. We feed our scraps to the worms and then feed their poop back to the plants and everyone is happy. I’m hoping the worms last longer than our leaf insect pets which all died after a couple of weeks.

My latest obsession
I have a tendency to get a bit obsessed about things like cycling, crochet, playgrounds etc …. but my latest obsession is gardening. I have always loved gardening but right now I have really fallen off the wagon. This is partly because spring has arrived and also because the garden at our new house is worthy of Aberdeen’s garden…

Harald
My new bike has a name: Harald after Harald Hardrada. We’ve had a fantastic day. I spent several hours in the garden this morning. Our garden is amazing and I love it. The kids were also out there building hotels for snails and grubs and worms and anything they could find. It’s feeling very much…

The school garden
I spent most of my day off yesterday in the garden at school with Ben and a friend, weeding and putting in new plants. There’s a small garden there but it has been neglected and is a pretty sorry sight. Someone at some point has put in some bamboo which was a big mistake because it just takes…

Butt plugs, deadly nightshade, and hookers
Apparently a large, green, blow-up Christmas tree in the centre of Paris is outrageous and humiliating if you’re of a right-wing political persuasion. The sculpture, which was part of an exhibition of modern art, was vandalised by right-wing protestors. Why? Because it looks like a butt plug. I have to confess that I didn’t even know what a butt plug…
