Rugby

Newsflash: I watched the rugby! Well, some of it anyway. I don’t usually take any notice of these high-profile sporting events but my mum and step-father (Doug) arrived yesterday and I discovered that New Zealand were playing Australia in the final of the world cup. Benย decided not to tell me about this (he says he assumed I already knew like all the rest of the world but I secretly think it’s because he didn’t want me looking smug if Australia had won).

At one point during the game I asked who won last timeย and Ben and Doug gave me a look of incredulity. It turns out it was New Zealand and I was living in New Zealand at the time and suddenly memories of the world cup and Auckland came flooding back. I was about as interested back then as I am now which is not very much at all.

The game tonight was mildly entertaining. You’d think lots of ย young men in tight shorts would be enough of a drawcard but footballers have never appealed to me,ย although I have to acknowledge that Dan Carter is pretty hot. During the game itself they seem to spend a lot of time with their heads in each other’s bottoms and then piled up on top of each other on the grass. It’s a wonder they don’t all have brain damage.

Congratulations to New Zealand. I probably would have preferred Australia win but I don’t really mind. Apparently the New Zealand economy declines when they lose games like these so it’s probably just as well they won ๐Ÿ™‚

      You didn’t miss much.

In the US domestic violence rates spike on Super Bowl Sunday. I treated perpetrators for many years, so I avoid watching coach potato sports.

That’s sad. It’s just a game but some people are very sore losers.

I’m with you Rachel. I just don’t understand the appeal of contact sports like rugby, American (Canadian) football, boxing … Actually, I feel the same way about most sports. I like being on my bike but I’m not a racer. I do it because it makes me feel better.

Yes, I would prefer to be playing or participating in sport rather than watching it.

I am following the Rugby World Cup but did not bother to watch the final match because I knew All Blacks will win ๐Ÿ™‚

Yes, I think they were the favourite and they dominated the game.

I do prefer rugby to football, as I like the raw excitement when they are surging up the field. I also think it’s much more gentlemanly than men’s football (well most sports are), none of that abusing of the ref that’s so endemic in “the beautiful game”. Also as someone who does a *lot* of jumping during my workouts, I am absolutely amazed at the height that these huge powerhouse men can reach in their jumps, and then the speed that they can run, and then they can barge each other into the ground too… (I know they all have different roles, but there’s more crossover these days) it’s a very impressive feat of the human body.
I like the way Ben says he thought you “already knew like the rest of the world.” ๐Ÿ™‚

I have to admit they were pretty good at those jumps and some of them can run really, really fast. It is impressive.

*weeps* There are certain failings in world education and this clearly is one…. I too married a philistine considers every game I pay to see a waste if I could see it on the TV

I’m a disappointment to my father who calls me a “football heretic” ๐Ÿ™‚
