Road works and Daniel's party

Street Maintenance

Auckland Transport has spent the last week ripping up the footpaths and kerbs on our street and replacing them with new footpaths and kerbs. I can’t think why they’re doing this as the footpaths and kerbs looked fine to me before. What I find even more frustrating is the absence of a cycle path in the new footpath/kerb. If paths and gutters are being ripped apart and new concrete poured and set, then doesn’t this provide the most efficient and cost-effective way to stick in a cycle path? Do it at the same time and make use of the same labour and raw materials while minimising the hassle for residents. There really are morons running the show.

Yesterday, as the concrete was setting on our new footpath, I wandered down to have a look and thought about etching in a picture of a bike. No-one was looking. But I chickened out. I’m just a coward. This morning I discovered some teenagers have done what I was too afraid to do and have scrawled something illegible in it overnight. Now I’m really bummed I didn’t do something myself.

If  you want really good quality of life for your motor vehicle, then move to Auckland – city for cars.

Daniel’s Party

It’s not Daniel’s birthday till the end of the month, but we had a party for him yesterday to coincide with a visit from overseas friends. Daniel had a great time and tells me his favourite bit was pass-the-parcel. There were 15 kids here yesterday and thankfully, that’s the end of party season for us for another year. Hooray! Here’s the cake, which I miraculously managed to avoid setting alight when 6 candles were lit on the bow:

Happy early birthday Daniel! Oh my goodness Rach, that cake is amazing!! The cupcakes look pretty delicious too, you should start up a catering business 🙂

Thank you! But definitely no to the catering business. My cooking is somewhat unreliable. Often burnt or undercooked.

I feel hungry just looking at all the delicious food, Rach. Daniel will get two birthdays now?

Not exactly. He’s just getting one party but he’ll get his present from us on his actual birthday.

Happy early Brithday to Daniel. Cake and cupcakes look brilliant. With regard to the road – I know the frustration you feel. They have started putting new seal down on Memorial Avenue up my end. Not sure why as the road is level and looks fine to me. Have recently been over Brighton way – roads up and down, holes, etc. So why do my area when the East is in such shocking condition? Pointless.

That is so shocking! Why would they do that?

All I can think of is:
        a) Keep the tourist travelling from the airport so the shock of the rest of the city is huge
        b) Make the people in the East more depressed
        c) Nothing better to do

        I reckon it’s a) for the tourists.

wow rach, your picture of Daniel’s party looks like a shot out a Women’s Weekly Children’s Party book. Very impressive. If I ever do have children you can be my adviser (and possibly moral support given I have difficulty making two minute noodles).

That cake is straight out of the Australian Women’s Weekly Children’s Party Book. Daniel chose it. I did have to be a little creative with the embellishments because the cake in the book used curly wurly and life savers for the ship but I couldn’t find those here.
