Soup, hamster, lights

Dinner tonight was soup with homemade sourdough. I made the soup using Hodmedod’s mix of British grown peas. You can buy it in 5kg bags to save money. The pea mix alone consists of 5 different varieties: red fox carlin peas, black badger carlin peas, marrowfat peas, blue peas, and yellow peas – all grown here in the UK. I added celery, cabbage, pearl barley, onion, garlic, chilli, tomato paste and lots of herbs. I also threw some tofu in just to use it up. This is often our Friday night meal. It was delicious! Why do people eat so much unhealthy processed food when cheap, healthy food like this tastes so good?

I found a bird’s egg on the ground last week beneath the feeders. Something had eaten the contents. I think it belongs to a pigeon or wood pigeon. Apparently they lay eggs in the winter sometimes.

A small white egg about the 4cm long.

Lucille our hamster is doing very well. She’s now 6 months on from her major surgery last year and you would never guess. Here she is climbing up one of the sprays to eat it. She loves the sprays. I’m not sure what this one is but she always devours it along with millet and flax.

Lucille the hamster climbing up the side so she can reach the top of the spray to eat it.

Last weekend we went to the Spectra light festival in Aberdeen which comes once a year for a weekend and always attracts queues of people.

I often scoop up leftover cooked vegetables and make a soup out of them, and it’s always delicious and always different. It’s so easy, and I’m not even much of a cook.

Soup is great for leftovers and it probably helps that we live in colder climates. Soup isn’t so great when you live somewhere hot.

My husband mentioned how much we use the Instant pot now and how it has changed the way we cook. I’ll see if our organic/plastic free shop has peas. Your recipes have helped me cut down the amount of meat that the three meat eaters get through, as I can make something really nutritious and full of protein and then the meat can put in a token appearance on the top.

That is so great to hear! The instant pot really makes a difference when cooking with legumes like these as you don’t need to soak or plan in advance. I just chuck it all in then set it and leave it to do other things. That’s so great that you can cut down on the meat you use too.
