A walk in the snow at Tom’s Cairn

We woke up to a winter wonderland today. I immediately went out for a run in the snow, stopping many times to take photos.

Duthie Park in the snow with the rotunda in the distance and a low rising sun behind giving the sky an orange glow.

After breakfast we went for a hill walk in Finzean up to Tom’s Cairn. We haven’t done this walk before and I was a bit hesitant about an unknown hill walk in the snow but it turned out perfectly. You can park right beside the start of the walk next to the Finzean standing stones on the B976.

The sign showing Tom's Cairn is 1.5 miles.

The first part of the walk is up a steep forested hill then after that it’s a relatively easy walk along the ridge with glorious views in all directions.

I’m not sure why it’s called Tom’s Cairn or who Tom is and the locals I asked didn’t know either.

A pile of rocks: Tom's Cairn. The view behind is of blue sky with valleys and hills beyond.

On the way back the weather turned and it started snowing. Visibility got quite poor but I think much of the problem with this next photo is Ben’s camera got all fogged up and he didn’t wipe it first.

Elizabeth in very poor visibility with everything misted up.

I got a photo of Ben looking miserable in the snow as per our annual tradition.

Ben looking miserable.
Rachel looking very happy but covered in snow.

Afterwards we had lunch at the Finzean farm shop and café.

The farm shop for lunch at the end.

Mostly I wanted to go back to the Finzean farm shop because last week when we were there I spotted a silkie print that took my fancy so we went back for it. Ben had silkies when he was a boy. They’re so cute. I want to keep some at pets now.

A silkie print.

The fogged lens does make it look really dramatic. I guess you still need sturdy walking shoes and gear even if it is not as blizzardy as it looks in that photo, though.

Yes I would say waterproof shoes are the most important thing. It’s not nice getting wet socks and cold feet. But I just had a woolly coat on and it was nice and warm. It got covered in snow but I just shook it off.

Sensational pics. We’ve having a bout of miserable weather here, which is great – not – for the Christmas/New Year holiday period. However, I was talking to someone from Oz who is visiting her rellies here, and she made me laugh by saying that cold weather is underappreciated – lol!

I’ve heard it has been really hot in Australia so they’re no doubt enjoying a cool change in NZ.
