Animal friends and summer days

About a month ago our hamster Ruby died. She was slowing down and starting to struggle to walk. It was extra sad because we hadn’t had her for very long. I think she must have been quite old already when we adopted her from the SPCA. I guess this is one of the downsides of adopting from the SPCA.

When we were on holiday in Fife we adopted another hamster from a rescue in Kirkaldy – Mandy’s Furbabies. They take in lots of unwanted small furry pets and we were delighted to welcome Lucille into our family, a Roborovski dwarf hamster and thankfully a young one of just of 6 months old.

Since we’ve adopted Lucille we have hardly seen her. She’s not really into humans and comes out once we’ve gone to bed. But we hear her running on the wheel non-stop – I think she runs for much of the night. She’s a bit like our other hamster, Rocket, in this way. However when we turn the light on to take a peek she stops running and if we venture too close she’ll disappear into a burrow. Hopefully she’ll get to know us a bit more over time. From what we have seen of her she’s extremely cute and super fast.

Our pond has a resident frog who is just as adorable and was happy to pose for me while I took this photo yesterday.

This is not our dog in the next photo but a friend’s dog who we took for a walk yesterday.

As you can see summer has arrived in Aberdeen and with these warmer days I often combine my run with a quick dip in the River Dee. It’s so wonderfully refreshing and look how inviting it is.

I will say it over and over again how lucky we are to have such a clean river in the middle of our city. I don’t take it for granted at all and if ever I see rubbish in it I fish it out.

And when I’m not swimming or tending to animal friends I’m knitting. Here’s what I’m working on right now. I should be finished in the next few days and if it looks any good I’ll post a photo.

Ah – sunshine, shorts, and swimming weather – I’m looking forward to it finally arriving here. The days are noticeably longer now, but the temperature is still winter-ish.

It’s probably not much warmer here than in Christchurch. We had a top of 18C today but that’s pretty warm for here.
