Rocket’s cage gets a makeover

Rocket’s cage has been getting a clean this weekend so I took the opportunity to give it a makeover. I noticed that he’s been trying to dig in his sand baths and because they’re shallow all he ends up doing is kicking all the sand out of the container and making a mess. I decided to get a more substantial bag of sand and fill one side of his cage with it so he could dig and burrow in it if he chose.

He always appears to be very excited when his cage gets a makeover and tears around exploring. It goes a bit like this – run on wheel, run up ladder to new cubby, go inside cubby for a sniff, come back out of cubby and down ladder, run up to food level and eat a bit, then run back down and run on wheel, run over to coconut and go into coconut kicking out some bedding at the same time – over and over again. It’s a bit like watching a child with ADHD, or so I imagine. I wonder whether hamsters have that?

Here’s the new sandy area in his cage. So far I haven’t seen him doing any digging in it.

He still likes that old plastic sand bath which I’ve retained. He actually uses it as a toilet so good to have.

I took a video of him on the wheel and doing a bit of exploring.

The cat was very interested in watching the whole thing.

I’m not yet finished with it but perhaps I need to do some rearranging regularly for his benefit, because, as the saying goes, a change is as good as a holiday.
