Elizabeth and Etienne in a tree at Newton Dee

Newton Dee and a hamster update

The kids cycled themselves to Newton Dee today, had lunch, then visited the playground. I think they enjoyed themselves. Daniel took these photo.

I took Rocket to the vet for his monthly teeth-trimming. I’ve found a vet who has experience with hamsters and she trims his teeth once a month now. She was quite surprised by how well he is and commented that he seems to be getting better and better.

A couple of months ago I thought we were just managing his end of life care and making him comfortable. But now he’s as energetic as ever. Since the vet started trimming his teeth he hasn’t had any abscesses so we are fairly confident this was the problem. Rodents are meant to gnaw their teeth down but Rocket has never been a chewer.

He still only eats soft foods for reasons we don’t fully understand but I soak his regular hamster food in boiling water now then feed it to him once it has cooled down and he likes that. He also still likes coconut yoghurt and tofu plus fresh fruit.

Here’s a video Ben took of him this week running on his wheel. He doesn’t look old and sick at all.
