Daffodils and vote cycling

The days are getting really long here. I’m surprised by how light it is and for how long. The vampire in me is wondering how I’m going to get to sleep mid-summer. I might have to get some blackout curtains. Sunrise is at 6:03am and sunset at 8:13pm but it starts getting light sometime around 5:30am. I know this because it wakes me up. That’s way too early.

The daffodils are at their peak right now and they look lovely:

The National Cycling Charity (CTC) has a website where you can write to all the parliamentary candidatesย in your electorate to ask about their cycling policies. It’s very quick and easy to use as the letters have already been written – although you can edit them if you want to – and all you need to do is type in your postcode and it finds all the politicians for you. Go toย http://votebike.org.uk if you want to give it a go. I did it this morning and I’ve received two responses so far.

Thanks. It did turn out well.

I was going to suggest that you should join the Pedal on Parliament protest ride in Edinburgh on 25th April, then realised you were in Aberdeen (nice picture of Dunnottar Castle by the way), so will instead suggest that you join the Pedal on Marischal (http://pedalonparliament.org/why-were-pedalling-on-aberdeen) ride the same day. Together we can make Scotland a cycle friendly nation ๐Ÿ˜‰

I would love to participate in that but I’m going to be away then unfortunately. It’s especially a shame because I think I’m fairly unique in Aberdeen as I have a bakfiets and cycle around with children on board.

Enjoy longer days. It is good to experience change, which is why I am not complaining about short and wet days here. ๐Ÿ™‚

I agree. Change is a good thing as it helps us to appreciate what we experienced before.

I know the feeling! Tough to sleep with so much light.
    Love the flowers!
By the way,, I have been collecting photos of original and cool bikes for you.

Oh thank you, Lucile! Are you going to post them to your blog? I’d love to see them.

Yes, it’s always easy to forget, in the UK, just how northerly we are. Aberdeen being more northerly than Moscow. And with that the extreme seasonality, especially with regard to daylight.

Years ago I was in Skye for a field trip near midsummer – there was barely an hour of proper night..

(I could also rant on about fair weather cyclists being out on the paths now.. didn’t see them in January.. but that would be unsporting.)

Yes, it’s very easy to forget given how mild the climate is given how far north we are. I’m a bit nervous about summer now. I like the dark!

Oh and I was out on my bike in January ๐Ÿ™‚

I wouldn’t worry about not sleeping. Somehow, when there are more daylight hours, the body easily stays awake more, so you will not need as much sleep as in winter. (Must be something triggered in the brain?)
And I love that there are so many daffodils in your photo ๐Ÿ™‚

Gorgeous photo, all the spring flowers are prolific this year. I struggled with the light nights when I moved back to the UK, despite growing up here! I got used to it getting dark at 8pm in the summer in California, but here it is 10pm and still not dark. Even later where you are at the height of summer I imagine. Great if outdoors but for sleeping, blackout curtains or blinds are the answer ๐Ÿ™‚
