Blackcurrants

Allotment berries

It has been a couple of weeks since I visited the allotment and we’ve had lots of warm weather and rain which was meant it was an overgrown mess. Fortunately I enlisted the help of my family although it’s debatable how helpful Daniel and Elizabeth actually were. Still we managed to tidy it up much faster than had I been on my own but that was mostly thanks to me and Ben.

The good news is I covered part of my blackcurrant bush a few weeks ago as every year the birds get all the berries and indeed the uncovered part of the bush has been stripped bare but the covered part was full of ripe, juicy berries.

I didn’t take a big enough container to hold them all.

I’ve also got a western serviceberry which has delicious ripe berries just now too.

The blueberries are still several weeks away.

And the pear tree is full of pears.

That looks an excellent job, especially to harvest so much fruit without wildlife eating it.

I lose a lot of fruit to the birds. I have to cover the ones I want to harvest or the birds strip it bare.
