Daniel and Elizabeth digging for potatoes

Home-grown meal

It has been several weeks since I’ve been to the allotment and I knew it would be overgrown with weeds so yesterday I enlisted some helpers called Ben, Daniel, and Elizabeth. We managed to get a lot done in a short period and I think the kids even enjoyed aspects of it like harvesting potatoes which is a bit like digging for treasure.

The allotment from one end looking towards the shed. Ben's bike is in view as well as Rachel, Elizabeth and Daniel who are all digging.

We returned home with a decent selection of vegetables including onions, garlic and a very large marrow. At home I have lots of cherry tomatoes in my glasshouse so I decided to set a challenge for myself to cook dinner with only produce I’ve grown myself.

Freshly dug onions and garlic.
Peeled potatoes, cherry tomatoes, herbs and a marrow.

I stuffed the marrow with onions, garlic, tomatoes, chives, oregano, sage, parsley and roasted the potatoes. The only thing I didn’t grow was a bit of olive oil tossed on the potatoes for roasting. Oh and also a dash of perry vinegar for the marrow stuffing, plus we grated some leftover of my homemade sourdough as breadcrumbs for the top.

The cooked meal.
