Elizabeth and Rachel at Spectra 2024

Spectra 2024 and a walk in the woods

It has been a dreich weekend but while others may complain I’ve rather liked it. The soft, gentle lighting is kinder to my eyes and it also meant the queue for Spectra (Aberdeen’s annual light festival) was shorter than last year so we actually got into it this time. Last year the queue was too long so we only looked at it from afar.

Here are some photos of it this year.

Looking down on the lights in Union Terrace Gardens from Union Terrace.
Rachel and Elizabeth.
Lots of balls on poles in the shape of pyramids and all lit up in white and pink lights.

Afterwards we decided to have dinner in town. We hardly ever eat out now and on the rare occasions we do eat out I remember why we don’t. When you cook yourself healthy things at home with no salt and very little fat and sugar, everything at restaurants tastes salty and greasy. I really didn’t enjoy the food and it’s not a reflection of the restaurant we went to as it’s the same story at every restaurant now. I’ve thought about starting my own healthy restaurant with no salt and low in sugar and fat but probably no one would go to it because humans seem programmed to want to eat salt, fat, and sugar in large amounts. Oh well, we’ll just continue our boring existence and eat at home.

Today we went for a walk in the woods and it was lovely.

Do you have to coerce the kids much to go walking with you, or are they quite happy to?

Not at all. They really enjoy it and sometimes pester us to go.

I think not liking eating in restaurants is very freeing. These days I usually choose restaurants that are local and owned by individuals and then I have something very small and plain like a salad. I go for the atmosphere now. We are lucky though as Lewes does have a large enough proportion of health conscious people to have a lot of small and healthy options on offer.

I wish we had some health-focussed restaurants here. We have Wagamana which isn’t too bad and that’s where we normally go now.

This is a big light festival! I went to one at Battersea and it looked good in the pictures, but you had to walk around a lot to find the lights, it didn’t seem as immersive as your pictures.

It was very immersive. Going inside that box with curtains of lights hanging around you and with music playing was very stimulating. It was very different from looking at it from afar.
