Knitted baby garments

I’ve spent the past couple of days clearing out a cupboard containing bags of baby stuff. We’ve still got all the kids’ old baby clothes, nappies, and loads of beautiful knitted garments.

I took some of the clothes to the charity shop today and have been washing the knitted garments, most of which we’ll keep as I can’t bear to part with them. I enjoy washing woollens and the baby jumpers and cardigans were almost all home-made, mostly by my mother-in-law but also by friends. The crochet garments were made by me. This pile of woollens in the next photo isn’t even the whole lot.

We’ve also got a very special baby blanket that my mother-in-law knitted when she had her own children so it’s over 50 years old now. All her children and grand-children have been brought home from the hospital wrapped in it. I gave it a very gentle hand wash today. Isn’t it beautiful? It’s a family heirloom.

Here’s Daniel wrapped in it shortly after his birth.

And here he is again wrapped in the blanket with Gran.

When I was pregnant with Daniel a friend made me a cot blanket using wool from her own sheep that she spun, dyed and knitted herself. Isn’t that amazing! I love this blanket too. It also got a gentle wash today too.

Here’s Daniel with it as a baby.

And here’s Elizabeth wearing a jumper and hat that I made.

It has been fun to go through it all and give everything a bit of an airing and some TLC.

They’re lovely! There are some things we just can’t give away. I have a simple jacket our youngest brother made in a sewing class when he was twelve years old. He would be 58 years old now if he hadn’t died in a motor bike accident in 1997, so the jacket is nearly as old as the blanket your mother-in-law knitted 🙂 I’ll never dispose of the jacket, either, even though it’s not something that anyone I know of would wear. It just hangs in my wardrobe and jogs the occasional memory when I spot it from time to time, and that’s enough for me 🙂

I’m sorry to hear about your brother. That’s a lovely story about the jacket he made. I’m impressed a 12-year-old boy could even sew a jacket.

They are all so timeless. the lacey blanket reminds me of my childhood blankets.

Home-made things are the best and they do have a timeless quality.
