Lately I’ve been thinking about how we’re on this earth for so short a time and we should make the most of it. Learn and do as much as you can while you still can. I’ve really embraced this philosophy over the past year and have ticked three things off my list that I’ve wanted to know how to do for much of my life.
- Knit – I’ve always wanted to learn to knit and I don’t mean a square or scarf but a proper knitted garment. I’m now three jumpers, a cardigan, and a dress complete, plus some socks on the way. I don’t know why it took me so long to learn but I’m here now and it feels good.
- Bake sourdough – I tried many times over the years to make sourdough but always failed and eventually gave up. Last year I was forced into it when, in adopting a low salt diet, I discovered there’s no commercial bread low in salt. Necessity forced me to try again and this time I bought some starter from a baker which I’ve been feeding and it gives me several loaves of sourdough per week.
- Tap dance – this may sound like a silly one but I’ve longed to tap dance ever since I was a kid and became enthralled by Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire, Eleanor Powell, Ann Miller and many others. I so wanted to learn how to tap dance but never had the opportunity. Then as a adult an opportunity to go to beginner classes a few years ago arose but I chickened out…that is until three weeks ago. I’ve now had three tap dancing lessons and I can dance a time step! How cool is that? It was just a short summer holiday class but I plan to continue it next term.
You’re never too old to learn something new. Do it while you still can.
