Portlethen and vegan galette with friends

We had a lovely afternoon with friends in Portlethen today. Portlethen is a small village about 7 miles south of Aberdeen. It was originally a fishing village and there’s an old harbour there where the fishing boats used to come and go. Today it is more like a satellite suburb of Aberdeen with lots of residents commuting each day. We enjoyed a walk along the coast to the harbour, passing picturesque bays between plunging jagged cliffs.

In one bay there was a lot of litter and I lamented that we hadn’t taken a bag with us for rubbish collection but then we discovered an abandoned bag which made a perfect litter bag. We soon filled it up before discovering another abandoned Ikea bag and before long we had filled three bags of rubbish.

It made me feel good to do that because it’s such a pretty spot and this area is a habitat for sea birds and other wildlife. What purpose do we have in life if not to make the world a better place, not just for ourselves, but for other species too? We’re here for such short a period of time. Let’s leave it in better shape than when we found it.

The old harbour at Portlethen is very pretty and looked inviting. I can imagine it’s a nice place to come paddle-boarding in summer or even just swimming. It’s quite a contrast to the mess the oil industry has made of Aberdeen harbour.

Our friends made a vegan galette which is a type of French dessert. It’s a pastry in the form of a cake. It was delicious. I will have to try to make it.

It looks lovely – and looks like it could be a bit wild, too. The harbour is so picturesque! Good in you for collecting rubbish – wish there were more people like you in the world.

I find it satisfying to collect litter. For a tiny bit of effort you get a great outcome.

Is a pity you didn’t include a photo of the galette!
