It was my birthday yesterday. I’m 46 and edging ever closer to half a century. But I’m in great health, indeed I feel healthier than I’ve ever been, and happier than I’ve ever been.
I just got the results of my annual (although it has been two years now) blood tests this week and everything is great. People often say women can’t get sufficient iron on a vegan diet but I’m a menstruating woman who doesn’t take iron supplements or eat any meat and my iron levels are fine. I’m not sure why this myth has become so prevalent but I suspect it has more to do with marketing (of meat) than of science.
I also test for diabetes – my results are all good there – and this time I tested for inflammation too. They test for something called CRP (C-reactive protein) which increases in the body when there’s inflammation. My levels are almost at the bottom of the chart – 0.4 mg/L – and this can be attributed to a plant-based diet which is known to reduce inflammation markers in the blood and therefore reduces the risk of chronic diseases. CRP is particularly relevant today as it’s potentially an indicator of covid-19 outcomes with higher levels associated with more severe disease.
Last night we went for dinner at Wagamama where I was mean and forced the kids to order vegan. There is no way I’m going to let a celebration in my name be the cause of animal suffering and environmental destruction, especially for so inconsequential a reason as to satisfy our taste buds. I would rather not celebrate at all. Whoever plans my funeral should know this: vegan or nothing at all please. I do not want to be the cause of suffering to others.
Daniel complained bitterly but ended up eating two starters and a main. This is before.
It can’t have been too punishing for him because here’s his plate about 10 minutes later:
I forgot to take a pic before tucking into my dish which was the raisukaree curry. It’s so delicious and looked much nicer before I demolished half of it.
Ben made me a blueberry cake for dessert which we ate back at home. It was delicious.
