A happy birthday, happy Hogmanay, and Dinner for One

If you’re looking for something funny to watch this New Year’s Eve then might I suggest this 15-minute British comedy sketch filmed in 1963 which will have you laughing out loud. It’s played annually on New Year’s Eve in many European countries and is widely known throughout northern Europe except, oddly, in the UK where most people have never heard of it. I know of it because when I was in my early 20s I nannied for a Norwegian family one Christmas/New Year and the whole family sat down to watch this as an annual tradition. Freddie Flinton puts on an outstanding performance as a drunk butler to Miss Sophie for her 90th birthday.

It’s Elizabeth’s birthday today and our annual tradition of going to the pantomime followed by ice-skating at the Christmas markets has been scuppered by covid. Instead we had pancakes for breakfast followed by Pizza Express home delivery for lunch.

For cake I made a victoria sponge which is one of Elizabeth’s favourite cakes. I followed a recipe from Matt Pritchard’s book Dirty Vegan.

My little baby is a big 11-year-old now. I think she still had a nice day despite the strange circumstances.

I don’t think anyone will be sad to see the back of 2020. Wishing everyone a safe and healthy 2021 with lots of vaccine jabs for all.

Whoever says vegan food is boring doesn’t know vegan food. It was all delicious.

And to you too, Geoff. What could possibly be worse than a global pandemic? 2021 is bound to be better.

Happy Birthday Elizabeth and Happy Hogmanay to you all. At 64 and 70, we’re both hopeful of early vaccinations. Have a great New Year.

OMG I looked for a good vegan sponge recipe far and wide and gave up at this point. Was this one good? 😀 looks delish for sure!

It’s a really good recipe. I recommend it. The cake is light and fluffy as a sponge should be – as long as you don’t over-mix or over-cook.

Oh, happy birthday Elizabeth. She looks like she is having a great time in the photo, she always does. Your kids seem to have taken on board your and Ben’s positive attitude to life.
Does your vegan sponge have nuts in it? I have just been told that we are a nut free school at work. That cake looks really good.

Thanks, Denise. The cake doesn’t have nuts. The ingredients are apple puree, soya milk, oil, cider vinegar, orange essence, flour, baking powder, sugar, and orange zest.
