Hottest day ever for Australia

Australia recorded its hottest day EVER on Wednesday with a national average temperature of 40.9C. Paradoxically, the front page of The Australian newspaper, which is owned by Rupert Murdoch, ran a story on coal exports and another story attacking the people who are trying to tackle the problem of climate change.

Instead, a British news source is reporting the record-breaking heat in Australia. It is especially astonishing because Australia will do particularly badly as the climate warms over the coming decades. It is already the driest inhabited continent on Earth (aside from Antarctica) and it’s already very hot.

Even if we stopped all our emissions tomorrow the climate will continue to warm for at least another decade because of the emissions we’ve already made – it takes a little while for the climate system to catch up. We need to get our emissions to ZERO. Lowering them is not sufficient. They must be zero. At the moment we’re doing exactly the opposite of what needs to be done: our emissions are still going up, although the growth rate has slowed. If you think it’s hot today then there’s worse still to come because the hottest days today will be the coolest days in the future.

Solving the problem requires collective action from everybody. The small percentage of the population eating less meat or buying a smaller car are going to have little impact if the rest of the population does nothing. We all need to take action and more importantly, we need to demand action from the people in charge.

  1. When I saw the thumbnail of this post, I was impressed that even The Australian had put the temperature record on the first page.

After all these years, I am still too naive about this disgusting authoritarian movement.

    1. By the way, on the other side of the Earth there was also a temperature record in their observations going back more than a century. The station Fichtelberg in Germany reported a temperature record on the 17th of December. https://fichtelbergwetter.wordpress.com/2019/12/18/17-12-2019-rekordwert-der-lufttemperatur/

Global warming is global. That is a difference with the little ice Age in Europe.

    2. I don’t know what has happened to Australia. I feel like it’s a broken country. Yes we have rubbish papers in the UK but there’s more balance and I don’t think we’d be ignoring deadly bushfires and broken temperature records here to the same extent.

      1. At least the worst articles I reviewed for ClimateFeedback were the ones from The Australian. They are deeply embarrassing. You can only publish that if you are missing the genes for shame.

        They have an impressive record:

        1. That doesn’t surprise me to hear you say that. What’s really depressing is the number of people who read that paper and how little there is in the way of news in Australia that isn’t owned by Rupert Murdoch. The SMH and The Age are the only two main newspapers that are not Murdoch-owned. I don’t think there’s anything in Queensland at all.

  2. I think there are many Australians who are desperate for change to help mitigate climate breakdown, but are held back by the regressive right-wing. The right-wing are are only ‘progressive’ over exploitation and extraction. Australia has a highly exploitive and extractive economy, and those invested in it aren’t going to loosen their grip easily. The horror of widespread fires certainly won’t be enough.

  3. It’s almost a comic book level of evil: rich men destroying the earth for their own benefit.
