Worst invention ever

I’ve heard designers say the customer is not always right because if Henry Ford had asked his customers what they wanted they’d have replied with, “A faster horse.” I disagree.

The car is the worst invention in the history of all humankind. Some 3,287 people die every day in road crashes and more than half of those are young adults. Globally, road crashes cost us $518 billion. In the US alone, traffic congestion cost £305 billion last year. Cars have made us fat and sedentary causing all sorts of physical and mental health problems. They have taken away our communities, polluted our air, made our streets unsafe for active travel, and take up a disproportionate amount of land for parking.

If Henry Ford had instead listened to his customers he would have given them a faster horse, which is of course, an electric bicycle. The customer is always right.

  1. Absolutely. I remember as a kid watching the old TV series ‘Out of Town’ which had the late Jack Hargreaves talking about old countryside ways. He bluntly stated once that the worst ever invention was the internal combustion engine. It had a profound effect on me as a kid.

I went through the usual teenage boy thing of liking cars but have now swung the other way again.

    1. I completely agree. I’m not sure how long I’ve felt this way and I too was mesmerised with cars when I first got my licence as a teenager. But they have caused so much harm and damage and continue to do so unabated.

  2. I completely agree. The idea that several tons of hardware propelled by an emormously powerful engine that belches pollution is allowed to be driven by poorly skilled and qualified, massively entitled idiots is kind of stunning really.
