I’m in Paris for WordCamp EU 2017. In case you’re wondering what on earth I’m talking about it’s a two-day tech conference about everything WordPress. Last year it was in Vienna and attracted over 2,000 people. This year is even bigger. It’s a community-led event organised by a team of volunteers. There are WordCamps all over the world and chances are there’s one near you.
The WordPress community is very special. WordPress software is open-source which means anyone can download the software for free and anyone can contribute to its development. WordPress drives just over 28% of all web sites and the number rises with each year. It’s a privilege to be a part of this and wonderful to see and connect with all the people who attend.

We were there a couple of weeks ago on a 7-Day Cruise, so only a short visit to Paris, but fitted in a Seine cruise and blogged photos of the Louvre etc and stood under the Eiffel Tower. It looks like you had a great time there too. My wife, Christine, is going back with her mates from the school she worked at before retiring. She’s a bit more familiar with it now that we’ve been. I hope lots of good WordPress stuff was done. I’ve reported my main problem with it to Jetpack support – I can’t get NextGen gallery posts to auto-post to Facebook through the Socialise feature. Ordinary media posts do and Twitter and Tumblr work fine.

A 7-day cruise sounds wonderful! I’m only here for a few days – just a short visit for the conference.
I’m not sure what the NextGen gallery problem is but reporting it to our Jetpack team is the way to go. If you haven’t had a resolution by next week when I’m back at work then let me know and I’ll look it up.
They say its a known issue (even though NextGen gallery is most popular) so I’ve disabled social sharing from Jetpack. I still hope you get to see some of the city
I did find one near me (in September). What happens at these events? Is it worth it for a small time blogger like myself to attend? Anything you can tell me would be great.
Hi Anthony, I definitely think it’s worth it for bloggers. They have something for everyone: there’s the social aspect where you meet lots of friendly people all united by WordPress, you’ll learn about the things you can do with WordPress, you’ll get heaps of free swag from all the sponsors, and there’ll be lots of great talks. There are usually two tracks of talks: one is more technical and another which is designed for beginners, marketers, businesses etc – it depends who the speakers are. You have to purchase a ticket but they’re pretty cheap and this includes food on the day.
WordPress is such a great organisation. I’m glad it’s sunny in Paris, it was so grey when I went.
