A vintage tartan skirt

I’m taking some much-needed time off this week and today I went op-shopping (to non-Antipodeans op-shopping = charity chopping). I haven’t been op-shopping for ages and ages and I got some fantastic bargains including this gorgeous tartan skirt.

I could tell from the tag and the zip that it was very old but I wasn’t sure how old because I’d never heard of the label before. I Googled it when I got home and it turns out this is a brand from the 1960s called “Sportaville” and made in London.

The skirt is older than I am and in perfect condition. It has been very well-looked after and probably never worn by the looks of it. I will certainly wear it. I absolutely love it and it’s pure wool so perfect for a Scottish winter.

    Well done.

    What interests me most about these pictures of you in your home is the beauty of that room – the handles on the door, the mirrors, the painting over the chest of drawers, the wall paper … love it.

      Thank you! It is a really lovely room. We can’t take any credit for the wall paper or the cupboard door handles but the painting is mine – I bought it at a street stall in Paris almost 15 years ago. It has sat rolled up in a tube for most of that 15 years. A couple of years ago my father made a frame for me out of pine and I painted it.

        That’s interesting. I’m surprised you left the painting rolled up for so long. I like it and all of the other little details in the room. Keep showing images of it. Are other rooms in the house decorated similarly?

        What else could i have done with it? It was canvas and didn’t have a frame and I’ve never been able to afford to frame it. I probably could now but Dad came to the rescue a couple of years ago.

        Our house was built in 1904 and so there are lots of nice features and some of the wallpaper in other rooms is also lovely. I have always preferred old homes over new ones for some reason. They seem to have more character and in many cases they’re better built – true craftsmanship.

        I know what you mean. I also live in an older house. Not that old but some 75 years old. You are right. They have more character and seem to be better built than the newer homes. I look forward to seeing more of your home.

      Great buy? Good catch? I know what you mean. Op-shopping is very unpredictable – some days there’s nothing exciting at all and then some days you find treasure and that’s what makes it so much fun.
