Mince pies and free the nipple!

When I first moved to the UK as a twenty-year-old I was puzzled by the mince pie. Why were they eating meat for dessert? I thought a mince pie contained beef mince rather than fruit and nuts. Now I’m a little more cultured than I was then, although not by much, and I’ve gotย a good recipe for mince piesย which I want to share. It’s vegan too!

Ingredients

1/2 cup flaked almonds
1/4 cup raw sugar
1 cup currants
1 grated green apple
Finely grated skin from one orange
100g vegetarian suet
1 tbsp cointreau
1 tsp cinnamon
vegan shortcrust pastry (obviously you can use the fatty, buttery stuff if you prefer, but this is healthier and less sickening)

Mix all the ingredients up together (except for the pastry). Roll the pastry out and cut into circles. I don’t have any special equipment for this as I’m currently without all my kitchen stuff:ย it’s on a ship somewhere between New Zealand and Auckland. So I rolled the pastry out with a glass and then used the glass to cut circles. Place teaspoons full of the mixture on one circle and use a second circle as the lid. Seal the edges by pressing them together with a fork. Bake in a moderate oven for about 15 minutes.

This has nothing to do with mince pies but a blogging friend,ย PhoTrablogger, told me about thisย campaign to “free the nipple” (there’s a good post about it here) and this is as good a place as any to share it. I think there’s something very unhealthy about a society that promotes images of violence while punishing nudity. Facebook used to have a very strange censorship policy where videos of beheadings were ok but images of breastfeeding in which a nipple or part-of were visible, was banned. I think they might have gone some way to rectify this or so it seems from this article, Facebook changes breastfeeding mothers photo policy. Don’t get me wrong, I have no desire to walk around naked or topless – it’s too cold for a start – but there mustย be other things worth policing than a bit of a nipple. From the Huffington Post article –

Of equal importance to gender-based hate was the issue of the context in which content passes moderation. As a reflection of the world’s culture, Facebook continues to be a place in which depictions of women as sexually objectified (overt pornography violates community standards) or debased is broadly allowable, but others, in which women represent their own bodies for non male-gaze sexual pleasure, is largely not.

“Mince pies and free the nipple”. Sounds like a chant by the Feminist Xmas Party. ๐Ÿ™‚

Last week one of our customers sent heaps of mince pies which I did not bother to eat as I thought they are made of some meat mince. I only realized later that it is fruit mince and gobbled a few.

I have not much to say about topless stuff ๐Ÿ™‚

I’m glad I’m not the only one to get confused by mince pies. I’m not sure how long it took me to realise they didn’t contain meat but it was probably not until my second Christmas in the UK.

Apparently mincemeat pie traditionally had suet or even shredded meat along with the fruit and spices that comprise modern mincemeat.

I grew up in UK – and also thought mince pies were made of meat for years! btw I like your Cointreau addition ๐Ÿ™‚
You are right – there is something seriously wrong with humanity when a naked human form is deemed disgusting, but extreme daily violence is acceptable. I don’t watch our News any more, as they say “Some viewers may find the following visuals disturbing” (as if by saying this it is now OK to show it) then proceed to show incidents of extreme violence. But a non-sexual nude is totally taboo. It’s about time things changed. And no, I don’t want to run around naked either – although it is certainly hot enough to here ๐Ÿ™‚ – but I have no problem with those that do.

Yes, I love Cointreau and it’s my spirit of choice for desserts. I like to lick the tablespoon after adding it to baking ๐Ÿ™‚

I hardly ever watch the news either. But it’s not just news, it’s computer games and films – they’re so filled with violence and not only that, the violence is glorified. I think we should be really concerned about this especially given how many young people spend time playing these games.

Absolutely. They become inured to it, and then take that attitude out into the real world.

You certainly have some interesting topic combinations in your blog. I’m like you. I was surprised when I first encountered a mince pie and it had no mince.

We are indeed a strange world in that we are comfortable with violence but not women’s breasts, to quote the Huffington Post, for non male-gaze sexual pleasure.

Would love to see any pics you have from your work Christmas party.

I’d like to see pics of my work Christmas party too! The truth of the matter is that I didn’t take any. A group photo was taken which I’m hoping to get a copy of and I’ll post it to my blog if I do ๐Ÿ™‚

Hey, good to know that you liked that post. Thank you for the mention, But I guess the other blogger deserved the mention more ๐Ÿ™‚ And it is an interesting recipe for a blog post, two different things together ๐Ÿ˜€

Yes, you’re right. I meant to mention that post. It was good! I’ve just edited my post now to include a link to it.

It’s OK to put on a dress/top/bikini/evening gown showing every little bit and piece. But the minute you uncover the last part sh– flies. I don’t think I would feel comfortable taking off, but why should it only be a man’s right? ๐Ÿ™‚
And you see I haven’t gotten past the “comfortable” part. I should just being saying…”I don’t want to today but maybe tomorrow when I want to feel cool.” Still along way to go with changing attitudes. I admire those gals who are leading the way.

I don’t want to walk around naked either and I’m not sure that I really want to argue in favour of this. But I do think it’s outrageous that a woman can be arrested for breastfeeding in some places if she happens to inadvertently reveal a nipple.

Glad to see the conversation going! I didn’t know about the Facebook policy, but wow, that’s messed up.

Your terrific post about this inspired me to mention it in mine ๐Ÿ™‚ Thanks!

The finished product didn’t look much better than that I have to say! Why do you think I didn’t post a photo ๐Ÿ™‚ But they tasted great and that’s the main thing.
