Busby the Bakfiets

Our lovely niece, Frances, came to visit us for the weekend. She is studying in Winchester and she arrived in York by train on Friday evening. I did what any proud bakfiets owner would do: I picked her up on my bicycle and she rode in the box with her luggage all the way home.

Frances left us today and I cycled her back to the train station but not before taking a nice photo of my passenger. She looks a little cramped I have to admit, but some people might describe it as cosy.

The bakfiets has a weight capacity of 80kg but I’ve read that this is a conservative limit and it can probably handle a lot more. I certainly did not find it difficult or hard to balance. It was harder work of course, but I’m getting to the point where I find the short trips to and from school and nursery everyday a little too easy for me.

When you own a bakfiets you belong to an exclusive club. It’s a bit like having children or owning a dog. It’s easier to start up a conversation with strangers also in possession of these things and you give each other knowing nods when you pass them in the street.

The owner of Get Cyclingย in York also owns a bakfiets. It is his rain tent that I am borrowing for Busby. He told me last week that he has at least 10 different bicycles to choose from to ride each day but he always chooses the bakfiets even though he’s not transporting children in it anymore. I asked him why and he said, “Because you command the road”.

Do you rent these Bakfiets in York Rachel? I’ve not seen them before now, only the bicycles that you can hire in London and other big cities.

Great that you got to spend time with your neice and love the photo…reminds me of when my granny used to ride her tricycle (she never drove) and I would sit in the front basket! So much fun, just like your neice is having here ๐Ÿ™‚

    mixedupmeme,
I think she was snug as a bug. At least she was nice and dry.

    Sherri,
I bought the bakfiets off ebay. I don’t know of anywhere that you can rent them. It’s a Dutch bicycle and they’re fairly common in the Netherlands. They’re quite expensive to buy, especially new, but we don’t have a car and they’re much cheaper to run than a car. ๐Ÿ™‚

You’d love Cambridge where they excel modified bikes. ๐Ÿ™‚

I do love Cambridge. I lived there for a few years more than a decade ago now and I loved it.

Great for guests – what a good idea!

  6. Rachel Avatar

Yes, but it might be tricky if I have to pick up more than one guest at a time.

    Haha, Rach that’s really cute!

Every time I see one around the streets of Brisbane I think of you. X

    1. Rachel Avatar

Really? You see these things in Brisbane?

    It’s so true too.

    Hi Rachel,

I’ve noticed that I rarely recieve a “notification” of your replies to the comments I have made. This may well apply to others, who would also be unaware of replies. It would seem to be related the absence of a reply button, or perhaps the manner in which the reply is made.

I think, the only time I have had notification is when your following comment has been immediately after the initial comment on the timeline.

I mention it because it would be a pity if commentators were unaware of your replies. Then again WP can be a bit buggey at times.

    Best of Luck
    Regards
    Graham

Thanks for letting me know Graham. Do you tick the check box which says “Notify me of follow-up comments via email”? If you tick that box it should email through replies. If you do tick it and it doesn’t email any replies then I would be interested to know.

  12. grahamatlinc Avatar

No, I don’t ever use that. I get all Notifications via the icon next to New Post at the top left of screen. I have noticed that where a blog’s comment section indents replies then they are always on that the notification list. Where replies are not indented then they are only notified when consecutive in time. It seems to be related to a blog’s “discussion” settings.

But, WP can be a bit weird sometimes. If nothing else avails, I’ll use the email. I just thought you’d like to know. ๐Ÿ™‚

Ok, thanks, Graham. Perhaps I’ll revert back to nested comments. I’m not convinced it was really working this way.

Thanks for communicating. It’s helped me realise that what I need to do, is turn on email notications for blogs that do not show a reply icon (i.e. do not have nested comments switched on). There a number of blogs that are subject to the bug.

I’ve also noticed that an author can reply beyond the nest level and these replies are not notified either.

But, watch out for sock puppets, they make use of the facility.

Oh, what a lovely simple world we live in. ๐Ÿ™‚ aaaaaargh

    1. Rachel Avatar

I didn’t realise this was the case but I’ve turned nesting on again anyway. I don’t think I get enough comments to warrant having it switched off.

        I got that one.

Have a great day. ๐Ÿ™‚ It’s sunny here and might be the last for a while. I might actually go outside.

        tink ๐Ÿ™‚

Sunny here too. I’m thinking of going cycling. ๐Ÿ™‚

    Yep, snug as a bug!

Hope you had a nice trip back to Winchester, Frances.

I’ll have to admit that this bakfiet is a mutant bicycle. ๐Ÿ™‚
Sorry, I do not have balance so bicycles or motorcycles are not for me. I just ride public transport or on short distances, I walk.
    Keep safe, then. Blessings, belsbror
