More from St Andrews

You can’t go to St Andrews without visiting the world-famous Swilcan Bridge and this we did today. I’m not sure whether you’re allowed to walk onto the green for the purpose of taking photos but we did and no-one told us off. Here are our tacky tourist photos.

Ben is attending a conference here so it is just me with the little epsilons during the day and so Daniel took the next photo of me with Elizabeth. Not bad for a 6-year-old.

Later we went for a swim at the beach. There was not a soul swimming in the sea and Daniel asked me why but he was able to find out for himself when he and Elizabeth ventured in. It was freezing! The North Sea is quite a bit colder than the Southern Pacific Ocean. But this did not deter Daniel and Elizabeth who both managed to stave off frostbite for a swim.

    Given that the golf tournament finished on Sunday, I suspect the course was close and so you were probably safe. 🙂

      That’s good to know. I wouldn’t want to risk getting arrested and sent by ship to Australia, never to return again.

    That is the very famous golf course that you were walking on. I remember when Ian Baker Finch won his first and only major, and it was on that course. The beach looks surprisingly inviting for Scotland, but I bet it was freezing!!

      I had to look up Ian Baker Finch to see who he is. I’m obviously not a golf aficionado.

      Scottish beaches are beautiful but very cold.

    Rachel, it brings back memories of a lunch at St Andrews many years ago. I also attempted to swim in a most beautiful loch but it was impossibly cold. The kids do look a little stiff in the water but obviously not put off. It’s wonderful reading your travel logs and hearing how happy you sound in the UK xx

      Thanks, Susie. It’s true that I’m very happy to be here but I think I’m easily pleased. I’m just happy to be somewhere where the ground doesn’t shake and where there are no active volcanoes.
