We released Matilda back to her flock today. I managed to remove the remaining threads on Tuesday and there were a lot. It was the most difficult case of string foot I’ve treated as I could see two tiny bits of thread sticking out of her foot but they wouldn’t unwind or come loose. I’ve indicated them in this next photo.
I was nearly going to take her to the vet for help but on Wednesday after a brief soak in warm salty water I managed to get one thread free and then suddenly it all came loose and I removed all of this.
I am pretty confident that was all of it but I would have liked to see the swelling in her feet go down a bit more than it has. Her feet still look quite deformed. These were her feet last Sunday.
Here they are today.
I could have kept her longer and continued to wash and spray her feet with disinfectant but she really didn’t want to be here and it broke my heart to see her huddled up next to her mirror every night. They are flock animals and prefer to be with other birds so we released her in the same spot we found her. I even invited all her pigeon friends to watch the release though they had other things on their mind.
She flew off up to the John Lewis building and didn’t return.
I’ll go back and check on her every now and again.
