Rachel in St Machar Cathedral

Critters and a cathedral

We’re back in Aberdeen after a lovely 5-day break in Aviemore. Victoria came with us as always and although she meows the entire way in the car, once we’re there she seems to quite enjoy exploring a new place.

Victoria the cat peering through the stair railings in a playful posture.

Lucille the hamster went to Mrs Murray’s Cat and Dog home for boarding. We take her entire cage there so it’s no different for her other than different smells and sounds. She’s still very wary of humans but I got the feeling she was pleased to see us when she came home. She’s no doubt used to the noises we make. She looks fat in this video because she just stuffed her cheek pouches with food before going for a run.

A slightly blurry photo of Lucille in her sand bath.

I took mum to St Machar Cathedral today, a 15th century building although there has been a Christian church on this site since 580AD.

Meanwhile in the backyard I got this video of a crow feeding from the backyard bird feeder. Crows are highly intelligent and like peanuts and sunflower seeds.

I also got our resident fox on camera again last week with something in his mouth. It’s the first few seconds of the video at the bottom. I can’t make it out but my guess is pigeon.

That is impressive stained glass. Amazing to have a Christian building there such a long time ago. I wonder whether it fell down or got destroyed? The website does mention English invaders although they didn’t come along until later.

I hate moving the whole hamster cage! So unwieldy and all the bits fall out.

I’m really thinking that it might be the time to get another hamster now after our last one died. Especially as a friend has just jumped at the chance to house sit in the peace and quiet of our place when we go on holiday.

It was a pain moving the whole hamster cage and required two people. It would be easier just to get someone to come and feed them while we were away but we didn’t have anyone we could ask. It’s perfect if you have a house-sitter.

Regarding the cathedral, I doubt they know what happened to the original buildings but in 580AD it probably wasn’t constructed all that well.
