Fowlsheugh Nature Reserve

About 20 minutes south of Aberdeen by car along the coast is the Fowlsheugh Nature Reserve which hosts the largest seabird colony on the east coast of Scotland. In summer it is teeming with over 100,000 Guillemots, Razorbills, and Kittiwakes. We visited it today. Since it’s only March there were not very many birds. You need to visit from May to early August for that so I’m sure we’ll go back. But be warned – there are only 12 parking spaces and if they’re taken you need to leave and return another time.

It was a spectacular walk just for the views and the waterfall and the very many gulls which are there all year round.

Three small figures on the opposite cliff give a perspective on how high they are.
The waterfall at the start of the walk cascading down the cliffs into the choppy sea below.

There’s a shelter at the end of the walk that you can sit inside to escape the elements and enjoy the view at the same time.

A plaque showing that reads, "In memory of George W Anderson and his wife Dr Moyra S M Anderson whose generous bequest provided for the erection and maintenance of this shelter to ensure that the others could enjoy, in comfort, the spectacular beauty of an area which gave them both so much pleasure in life. What a lovely thing to do, build a shelter for people. I liked your picture showing the scale of the cliff against the tiny people too.

I’m glad you noticed! I specifically took that photo for that reason – to see how high the cliffs are with the people appearing as tiny dots at the tpo.
