Hill of Fare

Hill of Fare

Cold frosty mornings often turn into bright sunny days in this part of the world which is what we got today. To make the most of the clear skies we walked up the Hill of Fare knowing we’d get some good views at the top and we weren’t disappointed. You can see in every direction from the Hill of Fare including to Lochnagar and Clachnaben.

I’d never been on this walk before as it’s not easy to find and there are no signs but it starts from a small off-road car park about 4 miles north of Torphins on the B993. The first part of the walk is along a forestry road through forests before eventually passing the tree line to the top. It’s a reasonably short walk – up and back in around 2 hours depending on how fast you walk.

It is incredibly muddy though! I recommend gum boots or go when the temperature is below freezing and the mud is frozen solid. We all got very muddy and I spent a good while cleaning shoes when we got back home. But it was worth it.

You can see Lochnagar in this next photo – it’s the ridge covered in snow towards the right.

I like the way your pink jumpers look so sympathetic to the landscapes around you.

Thanks. It does a bit – I hadn’t noticed. It’s all the surrounding heather.
