The music hall in Aberdeen

David Suchet: Poirot and more, plus a lovely dress

My sister bought us tickets for Christmas to see David Suchet at Aberdeen’s 2024 Granite Noir festival. We saw it last night in Aberdeen’s magnificent music hall which was originally built in 1822 and the show is excellent! There are still some tickets for the second show tonight; we highly recommend it.

Me standing outside Aberdeen's Music Hall on Union Street.

David Suchet is the very famous face of Agatha Christie’s Hercule Poirot. He played the character for over 20 years and is now a well-known face and voice all over the world. It was fascinating to hear Suchet speak about how he came to find the character – his dress, his walk, and his voice and now none of us can imagine anyone else at Poirot. I know actors do a lot of research for their roles but it was entertaining to hear it all first-hand and to really get a feel for how seriously they take their craft.

The stage in the music hall - empty with two chairs ready before the show starts.

He also spoke about his life and career including lots of bits I didn’t know about outside of Agatha Christie including playing Captain Hook in a Pantomime last year which must have been exhausting. He’s 77 years old but doesn’t look it and has the energy of a much younger man. We also got a very engaging lesson about Shakespeare and how to read and play his characters. I wish I could have recorded it for the kids as I’m sure it would have helped them with English assignments.

I got to wear a lovely Vilshenko dress I bought on Vinted last year for £40. All the detailing including the silver near the hems is embroidered.

A simple black dress with pretty embroidery around the edges consisting of flowers and silver dots.
Close-up of the embroidery near the neckline. It's pink and green flowers and vines.

It’s very comfortable too.

Beautiful dress, Rachel! We saw David Suchet too and I thought he was hugely engaging. I loved seeing the walking stick and the moustache.

It was such a great show! The moustache is so excellent and I loved the poem on the back of the frame.
