Statue of John Macleod, Duthie Park

Photos of Aberdeen

I took this photo of a man in a kilt washing windows a couple of weeks ago when walking into town with Elizabeth. Only in Scotland!

Last night we went to a Christmas party at Ben’s work. We’ve had several frosty days and it took us around 10 minutes to scrape all the ice off the car.

There’s a heavy frost again this morning. Here’s the bird feeder in our back yard.

It’s a lovely sunny day today albeit only -3C so I went for a run. I don’t think I’ve shared a photo yet of the new statue that appeared at Duthie Park over the summer. This is John Macleod, one of the discoverers of insulin. He went to Aberdeen Grammar School and studied medicine at the University of Aberdeen. Before the discovery of insulin people with type 1 diabetes had to follow a near starvation diet and didn’t live very long. They did a good job of the statue and sometimes as I run past I see it in the corner of my eye, forget it’s a statue and think there’s someone sitting there.

It was frosty when I took the Co-wheels to collect the left over supermarket food last night. Luckily it wasn’t a 10 minute job, or I would have missed the closing time for the second supermarket. We were short of volunteers so I took my husband. On our way back to the food distribution office, he saw a woman looking like she was going to throw herself in the icy waters of the river and he stopped and ran back to her and called the police and then talked her down. Apparently she had jumped in the river before. I hadn’t thought of what life must have been like for Type 1 diabetics before the discovery of insulin. What a hero.

oh my goodness what a hero your husband is! And how fortunate that you just happened to be driving past at that time. Had she tried to commit suicide before but survived?
