The kids walking down Scolty hill

Autumn in Aberdeenshire

Stunning autumn colours in the Scottish countryside today. This is Scolty Hill in Aberdeenshire: the best little corner of the planet.

Four kids walking down from Scolty Hill on a bright sunny autumn day with lovely views in all directions.
More views of the walk down with greens, reds, and browns on the landscape with a clear blue sky.
Lowers down on the hill now with small evergreen saplings and some trees already bare for winter.
Another view from near the top with heather in the foreground and views in the distance.

The tower behind us in this next photo is a 300m high monument built for a local man, General William Burnett, who fought alongside Wellington in the Napoleonic Wars. There’s a spiral staircase inside that you can walk all the way to the top.

All of us on a rock with the tower behind us and smiling at the camera.

We enjoyed a picnic here and it was surprisingly still. Often when you get to the top of a hill in Scotland you’re suddenly blown away by the ferocity of the wind but today was calm and perfect.

Scolty Hill is about a 20-minute drive from Aberdeen through this scenery.

That’s really beautiful. More brooding than our autumn colours, we have so much yellow, dried grasses, and leaves.

We might be a bit further along than you because it’s colder here and winter comes sooner.
