The kids are back at school again after a very relaxing summer break. The big news is that Daniel got excellent results for his iGSCE exams, scoring 5 x A*, 1 x A, 1 x B. The B was for global perspectives which is a bit like social studies. He got 97% for his maths exam and 96% for physics. He even got A* for English and A for French which is especially rewarding as he really struggled with French initially and was not keen on learning a language when he first started at his school 18 months ago. His streak on Duolingo for French is over 1,000 days straight now and counting. I’m sure it has helped.
The school he goes to requires all students to learn a language right through to year 12 and students must also learn from a variety of subjects including the humanities and creative areas. Because Daniel scored 7 iGCSE in a broad range of the curriculum he has been awarded a Cambridge International Certificate in Education with distinction.
Daniel has obviously inherited his father’s aptitude for maths and physics but he also worked very hard. He dedicated all his free time earlier this year to assignments and exam study to the point where we felt we had to tell him to relax a bit and take a break. Nevertheless he seemed to manage it all very well without getting overly stressed as I used to before exams.
He’s just begun his final two years of school and is working towards the International Baccalaureate diploma. In addition to the academic knowledge, he’s required to meet weekly practical elements that fall into one of creativity, activity, and service. This could be anything from volunteering in the community to learning a new skill. There’s also a subject they all have to complete on theory of knowledge. It sounds very good and well-balanced.
It goes without saying that we’re excessively proud of him but perhaps more important than all the academic success in the world is that he’s a kind and caring individual. I couldn’t hope for anything more than that as a parent.
