Swimming in the Dee

Dinner and a swim at Banchory

The intrepid cyclist took off on an overnight trip to Banchory yesterday, cycling along Deeside Way and taking a small diversion to Drum Castle en route.

We have a French exchange student called Etienne visiting us for a few weeks to improve his English. He arrived yesterday so we went out to Banchory Lodge hotel to have dinner last night with grandad as a sort of celebration as there’s lots to celebrate: a visitor from France, Grandad is here, and the kids got their school report cards yesterday and they both did exceptionally well. We’re so proud of them.

The Banchory Lodge hotel is the perfect place to stay if you want to cycle from Aberdeen to Banchory and spend the night because the bike path goes straight to it. It’s beside the River Dee which gives the restaurant a lovely view. Yesterday was hot by our standards so we took our bathers and went in the Dee after dinner. It was lovely!

The River Dee is beautiful. I love that we can swim in it and the water is fresh and clean. It was warm too. But I’ve never seen the water levels so low. We really need rain.

What is hot by Scotland’s standards? I see that most of your party are still wearing long sleeves outside. Just asking, because I want to get an idea of how, despite being hot, how truly staunch you might have been to go for a swim in a river ๐Ÿ™‚

I think it reached 22C that day but it was 9pm when we went swimming and it had cooled down by then so long sleeves or a jumper were needed.
