Anti-gay-marriage campaigner has affair and leaves wife and kids

I’m delving into the depths of the gossip columnists by writing this but it’s too dreadfully hypocritical not to share. Who needs fiction when there’s real life? You may have heard of Barnaby Joyce. He’s the Deputy Prime Minister of Australia and leader of the National Party (a conservative party). He was in the news last year for being disqualified from holding office on account of having dual citizenship. Before that he was in the news for forcing Amber Heard and Johnny Depp to apologise for bringing their pet dogs into Australia without declaring them.

Now he’s in the news again for impregnating a woman more than 15 years his junior. He’s since left his wife of 24 years and their four daughters. What politicians do in their private lives is none of our business. If a politician wants to have a string of affairs that’s his business and not our concern, provided he obeys the law. However in the case of Barnaby Joyce it’s different because he has made it his business to interfere in the private sex lives of other Australians. He has been an active campaigner against same sex marriage, giving traditional family values as the reason. Apparently he said, “same-sex marriage would negatively affect his four daughters.” And when speaking about his own daughters – be careful not to spit coffee all over your monitor when you read this one – he says,“We know that the best protection for those girls is that they get themselves into a secure relationship with a loving husband,”. Yes, a loving husband with a mistress is the best thing for a girl.

  1. What a news. I am pro gay-marriage. And I have nothing against a husband or wife having a mistress/lover when both the spouses agreed to this beforehand.

  2. Reading the title I had expected that the anti-gay campaigner had left his wife for another man. Why would anyone care what others do in their bedroom? Many of these campaigners are fighting their own attraction to the same sex.

  3. I always have as bit of a chuckle when these things happen. Not at the wife and kids who are being cheated on of course, but at the arrogant politician who seems to think they know better than the rest of us how the rest of us should be living our lives. There’s that whole thing about cleaning off your doorstep first before judging those of others.

  4. There was a case in the US recently, wasn’t there – where a prominent anti-homosexual public figure was discovered to have had a homosexual relationship. You can’t make it up.

  5. What a wonderful word “protection” is. Because that’s also what women need, isn’t it, the superior capabilities of a man to ensure that they are able to negotiate their delicate way through the big bad world.
