Academic porn stars and Elizabeth’s book

I feel a bit bad bringing more attention to this fellow than he’s already got but I doubt the minuscule traffic I get toย my blog will make much difference and I also want to stick up for him a bit. Apparently a professorย in Chemical Engineering at Manchester University has been working on the side as a porn star. What’s wrong with that?ย Provided his contract doesn’t stipulate that he’s not allowed to take on any jobs outside the University then it’s not really anyone else’s business. I certainly don’t think one could argue that it’s a conflict of interests.

Our society is still overly puritanical in many ways. Sex: it’s the reasonย each of us isย here. Some people pay for it,ย some people film themselves doing it, some people go for threesomes, and some people prefer their own sex. As long as it’s between consenting adults then it’s not a moral issue at all. Indeed sex has nothing to do with morality. It could become a moral issue, for instance, in cases of rape but between consenting adults it’s neither moral or immoral. So if Ben decided he wanted to be “Big Ben” then he’d need to check with his wife first of course and maybe also his employment contract, but apart from that it’s no-one else’s business. And for the record, his wife would say no ๐Ÿ™‚

Elizabeth has started writing a novel. It’s called Mr Banana: how it all began. Here’s the front cover and the beginning of the first chapter.

The first page goes like this:

Chapter 1 The Wedding Will Begin

Once upon a time not so far in Fruit Town there was a little house not so big and not so small. There lived two bananas. One was a man and one was a lady. There were going to have …

She’s written several more pages already. I might post some of the other at some point.

It was interesting what happened with the Max Mosley case in the paper – he had a lot of public sympathy in the end and I think it was a kind of turning point in the public agreeing that what people got up to in their own time was nobody else’s business.
I can’t help thinking that if it were a porn star lorry driver, no-one would be making a big deal of it. I wonder if there’s a hint of class insecurity in the papers’ running of the story – I can’t see how this story qualifies as in the public interest anyway :-/

Oh I hadn’t heard of the Max Mosley case but I just looked it up. Maybe in 50 years society will have moved on and we won’t be so prudish about this but I guess it takes time. I think you’re right about the lorry driver. No-one would blink an eye.

Some income on the side. Why not if you could stand the work?

I’m hanging out to find out what happens to the two bananas. I’m wondering if they’ll get married and have baby bananas. This is exciting. I love Elizabeth’s penchant for writing. She’s getting pretty good at spelling. Frut Town is one of my favourite places! ๐Ÿ™‚

I think you’re onto something there with the baby banana. I have read ahead a few pages ๐Ÿ˜‰
