Sometimes our kids surprise us

Daniel is an unusual child. When he was little he was terrified of small children even, on occasion, to the point of screaming whenever they were around. This made life rather lonely for me at times since most of my friends also had small children. I used to draw story boards of the activities we had planned for the day and the trips we were intending to make, if any, and this helped quite a bit. I had a book of photographs of the other children we knew and showed it to him regularly.

He’s fantastic socially now and very popular at school, no doubt because he has a very cheery disposition. Most people don’t even realise he’s on the autistic spectrum and my life has become very easy by comparison. But there are some things he really struggles with. Spelling, for instance, and memorising Robert Burns ๐Ÿ™‚ Here’s an example of a recent conversation I had with him:

Me: Spell “group”
Daniel: g-r-o-n?
Me: No, the next letter is a vowel and the vowels are a-e-i-o-u. Which one do you think it is?
Daniel: y?

Repeat this three times in the one conversation. I feel like banging my head on the ground at times like this and probably get more frustrated with him than I should. It feels a bit like this:

Except that Daniel is really good at maths. He just struggles with writing and spelling.

This afternoon as I was cycling home from school Daniel asked me what water is made of to which I replied hydrogen and oxygen. Then he said, but if hydrogen and oxygen float, how come water sinks? WTF? Sometimes they surprise us.

Yeah, everything about children is amazing.

Perhaps you can show him http://elevateapp.com/ and see if he likes.

Oh yes. I remember you writing about that app. I still haven’t downloaded it. I’ll get it now.

Kids are great aren’t they?! My youngest son, 6, on finding out who his teacher was, mentioned ‘I’m going to help her with smiling’- Isn’t that better than saying ‘Oh pooh, she’s such a grumpy lady!’ He gave us a clue as to some potential Christmas presents in his writing at school ‘For Christmas I would like some maths books- I will write the answers’ Now his sister has instilled the inspiring vote of confidence that he is a maths genius…The lesson in modesty is to follow…Still, it is nice to know what one is good at I guess!

Your kids teach you Patience! ๐Ÿ™‚ But what fun also, to have inquisitive minds, and a child who sees things others don’t. Daniel is quite right! Water Should be a gas at room temperature, like Ammonia. The only reason it is not, is because of Hydrogen Bonds – a weak force of attraction between the slightly negatively charged oxygen atoms, and slightly positive hydrogen. So, if it wasn’t for these weak bonds, there’d be no water on Earth, and therefore no life!
Still, it will keep you on your toes, coming up with answers ๐Ÿ™‚

Just realised I haven’t replied to this yet but WOW, you’re clever! I didn’t know the answer at the time and had to look it up when I got home ๐Ÿ™‚

I’m “scifi” hammy ๐Ÿ™‚ did Chemistry. I just think it’s very cool that Daniel noticed this anomaly, which is why we need the different thinkers ๐Ÿ™‚

A lovely post to read. So good that Daniel has made such huge strides socially. I suppose he’s worked out why water doesn’t float by now! ๐Ÿ™‚

A friend of mine’s child used to draw everything upside down. When told it was upside down, he would lift it up by the edge nearest to him, showing the picture the right way up to the viewer, and say “No it isn’t, see”.

    Vive la difference ๐Ÿ™‚

Wow, that is very cool! What does he do now? Has he grown up?

Yes, a long time ago but I’ve lost contact. I expect he’s a genius at something. ๐Ÿ™‚

Wow…I had to read Daniel’s question three times and I still don’t get it… !

I had to look it up on the web when I got back home ๐Ÿ™‚
