Hawaii

I’m going to Hawaii this week and I have to say I’m not looking forward to it at all. The reason being that I don’t want to leave my kids. I know I’m going to bawl my eyes out the whole way there so I pity the poor soul who ends up sitting next to me on the plane. I have never left my kids overnight before and so this is a big deal for me. However I didn’t expect to find it quite so hard but it really is. Hawaii is such a long way away and I’m also gone for over a week which is quite a long time.

But it’s Hawaii you say? When I was growing up I spent every summer holidays on a beach in Southern Queensland. I’ve also been snorkelling on the Great Barrier Reef and I really don’t think any place on Earth can compete with that. It will also be hot and I’m not into hot. I like temperate climates best.

The main reason I’m going is to meet some of the people I work with and this aspect I’m looking forward to. This is the reason I’m going. Fortunately I won’t have to do this very often and once we’ve moved to Scotland I won’t have to travel very far any more. In fact, there was a meetup in Scotland recently. I would certainly choose to go to one closer to my home if I had the choice.

New Zealand and Australia are so isolated and far away from everything that it always takes ages to go anywhere when you leave this country.

Everyone says I should enjoy the child-free time and yes, there’s that of course. But I have to say that I rather like having my kids around.

Dear Rachel, my own experience of leaving my kids for a holiday was anxiety filled until I boarded the plane, calmed down and then embraced and enjoyed my lone time. I hope it will get easier for you. Maybe it helps if you have frightful brats for kids!

Maybe once I’m on the plane I’ll feel better. I expect I’ll be fine once I’m there.

You know my feelings on this subject Rachel because I’ve already shared that I never left my kids either and would be feeling just the same as you. Hopefully you will be busy with the distractions of the meetings but whatever I say won’t help…you will miss your kids terribly but think of the days going by and how joyful your reunion will be when you get back and thank goodness you won’t have to do this much more in the future. And don’t forget to pick up those grass skirts while you’re there…
Happy and safe travels to you my friend… and big hugs… ❤

I don’t have kids myself, but I can relate to the feeling. I always look forward to meetups, but it can be tough leaving family (in my case, my fiancée) behind. It’s bittersweet. But I find for myself, the anticipation is usually the worst part. You’ll miss your family, but you’ll also have fun. You’ll get to know some a12s, and I bet by the end of the trip, you’ll even be a bit sad to leave.

Thanks for your comment, Ryan. I suspect you are right. Part of me is feeling a bit excited and I haven’t started crying yet which is a good sign. I leave for my flight shortly.
