Reading and religion

Daniel’s second week of school has begun and so far, so good. He got “super kid” in class yesterday for doing something good and he was quite chuffed about it. He also brought home his first reader and can read the whole book from start to finish. It doesn’t matter that he’s just memorised all the words rather than actually reading them. In some ways reading is just memorising.

The past couple of nights Daniel has become quite upset at bedtime about his own mortality. He demanded Daddy find out what happens when we die. How tempting it is to adopt religion at times like these and have the comfort of telling your children they’ll go to heaven where everything is happy and beautiful. Daniel has also been concerned that Elizabeth will die before him and that he’ll miss her. The two of them play together quite often now and have developed a very harmonious sibling relationship.

    When my daughter was about four, but still at kindy here in Australia, she became very interested in religion. Consequently, we acquired quite a varied collection of children's readers on the subject and I'd have to say that by the time she'd started school, theology was her favourite subject. She had rather a disconcerting habit though of regularly saying to us, something like, "You'd be sorry if I died, wouldn't you?", which I found most upsetting.

    Perhaps I should look into getting Daniel some books that deal with death.

    Glad to hear Daniel's settled into school well… I'm a little jealous that you get to enjoy beginning readers, I love that "I can read it with out even looking at the words" stage. He'll be flying along before you know it.

    Ha, ha. He really is flying along. I have tried to introduce words to him over the past year but unsuccessfully. His teacher has managed to do it in just one week! He adores her.
