The butterfly

The butterfly has emerged at last! Our little caterpillar built his chrysalis just over two weeks ago and has been inside until yesterday. We noticed the chrysalis getting darker over the past two days and then  yesterday we started to see some orange.

The butterfly’s wings need to stretch and dry out before it can fly so it doesn’t do terribly much straight away. The kids were both enthralled:

Once his wings had fully expanded we took him into the garden and tried to coax him out of his home. For a little while we were worried he wouldn’t know how to get out!

But he managed to find the door eventually, with a bit of help.

This morning we watched him fly away.
It’s Daniel’s 5th birthday today. We are having a BBQ lunch at a friend’s house rather than a big party here. I’m quite relieved about that and Daniel is very happy with the arrangement which is the main thing. I’m taking the cake:

BBQ over and we’re back at home and I still haven’t published this. A photo from today:

Happy Birthday, Daniel. D looked on the calendar today and asked if he could call you… I suggest he could send a card instead. When does school start?

School starts tomorrow! D is welcome to call. I think Daniel would like that. Maybe next weekend?

Good luck for tomorrow Rach… it's great milestone and a big change for all of you. Hope it goes smoothly. Our school holds a 'tea and tears' session for parents on the first morning that the preps start. sniff sniff 🙂 Great family photo there in that post. We hardly have any of all of us together.Oh, and that cake looks fabulous. Happy 5th birthday Daniel. xx

Hi Rachel. Happy birthday to Daniel for yesterday. Have missed your blog for a few days. Was wondering just yesterday whether a butterfly had made an appearance. I've been noticing the ones in my garden. B
