It’s too darn hot

It is really hot today and I have resorted to using a damp face washer to keep myself cool. I don’t understand why people like hot climates. When it’s cold, it’s quite easy to add another layer and presto, you feel warm. But when it’s hot, there’s only so many layers you can take off and then what do you do?

Ben is going to Germany tomorrow for 9 days. I’m so jealous. He might even get to see snow. Instead we’re stuck here in volcano central. Speaking of which, I asked Daniel’s kindy teacher today whether they had a plan in place for when the volcano erupts next. She laughed at me and said “no” in an “as if” sort of way. They all think I’m the crazy natural disaster woman but they really should have a plan in place even if it never gets used. I heard through my friend that a parent at another Auckland school asked the same question except that she’s a volcanologist and she wanted to be assured that the school would begin evacuations immediately on the first signs of unrest and not wait for parents to arrive as by then it may be too late.

There are lots of British expats living in Auckland and a common reason they give for choosing New Zealand over Australia is because Australia has snakes. There are no snakes in New Zealand because they’ve sensibly chosen to avoid the volcanoes, earthquakes and tsunamis unlike the poms who are suckers. And me too I suppose. Nicer climate here though.

Isn't it funny how misconceptions arise? I mean, how many city dwellers in Australia are bothered by snakes? The poms must think they're swarming all over the place. Somehow glad they do:) As for heat, I can handle it as long as it's dry heat. It's the humidity that sends me over the edge. I'm thinking of Brisbane in February… I sometimes wonder how I'd cope in a place like Singapore. Die I suppose.

I can recall only one snake encounter in my entire life and it was hardly life-threatening. The spiders freak me out more and most of them are harmless.
