Our new home

I just adore our new house. It’s my *perfect* home with all the timber, sarked ceilings and enormous round windows. It has such a lovely feel to it and I feel very safe here. Earthquake-safe that is. I never felt safe in our house in Christchurch, hence the need to sleep in a caravan. I didn’t feel totally safe in our rental in Point Chevalier either but fortunately there were no earthquakes while we were there. But here, I feel very safe. The kids love it too. Daniel has a good view of the Sky Tower from his bedroom and we can see Mount Victoria in Devonport from ours.

Tonight is Guy Fawkes night and there are fireworks going off everywhere. We have wonderful views of the spectacle from our upstairs rooms. For people who don’t know what Guy Fawkes night is, a short explanation: Guy Fawkes lived in Britain in the 16th and 17th Centuries and was embroiled in a plot – the Gunpowder plot – to bomb the Houses of Parliament in London. The plot failed however and instead Guy Fawkes was executed on November 5th 1605. The British celebrate the occasion every year on November 5th with fireworks. New Zealand, by virtue of being a British colony, also celebrates the occasion. Australia used to celebrate it too before fireworks were banned for private use in most Australian states many years ago. Fireworks can be bought here but only at this time of year.

We are still in the process of unpacking and our carport is filled to the brim with boxes and packaging. It’s such a huge job especially with small children to look after. A few days ago we noticed some water seeping through from the upstairs floor. It was raining heavily at the time so we imagined the worst. I went up to investigate and have never been so thrilled to find Zeki had pissed on the floor and that our roof was perfectly watertight. We have since installed a dog flap which both dogs are just as delighted with as we are.

Hi Rachel! Nice to see you're enjoying your new house so much. It really does look great! I hope you're all doing well. By the way, I found a fun video about Guy Fawkes, it's from a program for 6-12 year-olds called Horrible Histories (a lot of older people like it too, like me): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fMNOnYxhpOYLove, Frances

Love the photos – the house and garden look just as good as they did on the real estate site. Lucky you having Guy Fawkes night. Thanks to the Nanny State here in Oz that fun was banned decades ago. It's never been the same since. Watch out it doesn't happen to you down the track or are NZedders just more dare devil?

Fireworks are dangerous and I can understand why they're banned in Australia. One of Daniel's kindy pals announced on Monday that he was nearly killed by Saturday night's fireworks when one fell over before firing off and so fired sideways rather than up. I also heard one of the other mothers confess that their fireworks almost burnt down the neighbour's house! Like every year, there were the usual list of injuries in the paper on Sunday. The ladder didn't come with the house. That last photo was one provided by the real estate agent before we moved in. Our carport is filled to the brim with boxes so I decided to use their pic instead. The movers will come and collect the boxes soon hopefully.
