It’s Ben’s birthday today and he was able to take the day off work so we all went to the zoo. I have a tendency to feel sorry for animals in zoos because it is just all so contrived and I can’t help but wonder whether the animals would rather be free. But zoos have come along way over the last century with exhibits getting bigger and bigger and providing more in the way of stimulation for the animals they home. They are also educational and Auckland zoo has active conservation projects as well as campaigns such as the
buy palm oil free campaign.
Our inexhaustible demand for palm oil is responsible for the loss of habitat for animals such as orangutans, Sumatran tigers, Asian rhinos and elephants. According to Auckland zoo, palm oil is used in at least 1 of every 10 supermarket items including cosmetics, cleaning products and food. A
palm oil free shopping guide is available on their site.
