We went for a picnic on Piha beach today. We really ought to have checked the weather forecast first though because it rained and rained all day and so we ended up having a picnic at the beach in the car.
Piha is about 30km west of Auckland and is reached after a gorgeous drive through the Waitakere ranges which is over 16,000ha of native forest. At its highest peak, the ranges are 474m above sea level.
Piha beach has waves, unlike many other beaches in the Auckland region, and so is attractive to surfers. It is known for its black sand which is one of the reasons I wanted to go: I’ve never seen black sand before. The dark colour is caused by iron with volcanic origins.
Elizabeth likes eating sand and I got a photo of her doing just that today. Ben remarked that if we had a super-magnet we could attach her to it and prevent her from running away.
