Billy bookcase with mouldings around the top

Adding trim to a billy bookcase

I did some DIY this weekend. We have too many books; more than we have bookcases for. So we decided to get two new bookcases to house them all rather than get rid of some books. I wanted a corner bookcase with a hard right-angle but had trouble finding one so we got two IKEA billy bookcases and I joined them together.

Two billy bookcases in a corner

First I bought a metal bracket from the hardware store and screwed it into the top to hold them together.

Then I bought some pine mouldings for the top. I also had to get a thin 4mm strip of pine as there was a small gap between the side edge of the frame and the top shelf.

I used a mitre and hand saw to get the 45° corners.

I’m quite pleased with how it turned out.

Next I’ll add some skirting around the bottom but that’s for another weekend.

Thanks! I got ideas and instructions from the Web. It’s amazing how much you can learn from YouTube.
