Vegetable pie all baked and ready to eat

Wholemeal pastry and a new prebiotic from M&S

I made wholemeal pastry over the weekend and it turned out pretty well. I made it with wholemeal spelt flour, olive oil and water – that’s it.

It was impossible to roll out into a perfect shape but you can cut off the jaggy bits around the edge.

Rolled out pastry with jagged edges

Half of it lines the bottom of a pie dish which I filled with a veggie stew using a variation of a recipe from The Hairy Bikers’ Veggie Feasts.

Then I put another rolled-out piece of the same pastry over the top.

Then baked it in the oven. The finished product was lovely and crispy.

We’ll definitely do it again. The family all had positive things to say.

Several months ago I blogged about a new dietary supplement I started taking which was basically 30 plants still in their whole form (i.e., not ground into a powder which causes them to lose their efficacy) to feed the gut microbiome and reap all the health benefits of doing that. It’s a great supplement but very expensive so I was delighted to discover a much cheaper version at M&S last week. It’s not 100% identical but very similar and a fraction of the cost. If you’re looking for a cheap and easy way to get those little dudes in your gut working for you then add a tablespoon or two of this on your porridge each morning. I am not receiving any payment from M&S for this post ๐Ÿ˜‚

It looks a really lovely pie. I would rather have the texture of wholemeal than flaky. Since I have been eating sourdough in preference, white flour/bread feels a bit wrong, not enough substance, and a bit soggy.

Me too. I can’t stand commercial bread now since I’ve been making my own.
