Six and allotment things

Elizabeth and I went to see Six on Friday night at His Majesty’s Theatre which was completely packed with a full house and queues out the door. Six is a musical about Henry VIII’s six wives who tell their own stories in song, competing for who had it the toughest.

A pic of the stage with the six wives performing.

I enjoyed it. It was very good but it did make me realise yet again how professional the production of Cats was that Elizabeth was in last week. The singing and dancing in Cats was significantly better than Six and I don’t say this just because I’m a parent whose daughter was in it. As I said previously, the young talent in Cats was extraordinary and those young people are already semi-professional and at the top of their field.

Today Ben and I went to the allotment to see what damage there was following Storm Floris. My blueberries are under a very makeshift, temporary cover to stop the birds eating them all and I didn’t expect it would have survived and I was right. I really need something better but here it is today after pinning it back up.

A very messy cover over blueberry plants

I have a pear tree at the allotment that never fruited until last year when I got three pears. Now the tree is covered in fruit and I’m expecting a delicious feast because the few I got last year were sensational.

A pear tree with loads of pears on it.

I have a lot of plants that are past it and flowering or going to seed but I can’t bear to pull them out as they’re covered in bees. I’m sure most of the bees are on my plot – there are literally hundreds of them.

I love the pictures of your allotment. This year I have grown tomatoes and hope that the strawberries will “take” in years 2 and 3 and produce more. Next year I will try potatoes. It’s not much, but I’ve taken comfort from the fact that the flowers attract bees and are doing good that way (providing sustenance in the middle of the urban landscape). It’s inspirational that you are growing edibles and providing for bees at the same time,

Thanks, Denise. I’m sure you’ll get strawberries much sooner than 2 to 3 years. They’re usually pretty quick. It’s hard getting stuff from the allotment as everything eats it but berries are good. Potatoes are pretty easy too.
