Seals and birds at Newburgh, Ellon Aberdeenshire

Newburgh seal colony

We took mum to see the seals yesterday as she’d never seen them before and it’s quite a fun outing. There are hundreds of them lounging on the sand at the mouth of the Ythan Estuary in Newburgh which is about 16 miles north along the coast from Aberdeen or a 20 minute car drive.

They’ve built lots of timber platforms and walkways since I last visited which makes it more accessible for people with buggys and wheelchairs. The seals were out in great force along with hundreds of different species of sea birds. It’s a nature-lover’s paradise.

Despite the warm sunny day the wind at the beach made it feel cold so we’re all rugged up. I told them in this next photo to pretend it’s really hot but I didn’t think they look convincing.

The council here is creating a paved city to sea pathway, some of which is new paving and some of which is replacing old paving. At first, I thought it was kind of a shame to iron out all the kinks and make it all smooth, but when I saw that more people were using it on bikes, wheelchairs, with walking sticks, wonky legs, and just recently in a something like a capsule, I couldn’t help but acknowledge how it made it more accessible to more people.

That sounds nice and a decent walk if it’s from Christchurch city centre to the beach – is that where you mean? Or is this Timaru?

This in Christchurch, and – yes – from the city centre.

I felt a bit depressed at all the things that are going on with oil companies stopping protests through legal action, as if the only thing that matters for the population is profit and development. It was nice seeing these pictures, and knowing that people are all attracted by nature, and want to be in a place that is natural and unspoilt.

Yes, I completely agree. Whenever I visit Newburgh I’m always so glad that the place is undeveloped. I hope they don’t ever built facilities there like restaurants and cafés because it will spoil what it is.
