Lunch at Banchory Lodge Hotel

Banchory Lodge Hotel and garden wildlife

Mum and I had lunch with some friends at Banchory Lodge Hotel last week to celebrate my friend’s birthday. It was lovely. We had a table right beside the river with captivating views as you can see in the photo. There’s nothing vegan on the menu but if you let the waiter know the chef will accommodate you. It’s a lovely spot. We’ve been swimming in the river here on a previous visit in mid-summer.

The four of us smiling while seated as a round table with a big window behind us and the River Dee just visible.

I’ve had the wildlife camera out in the backyard recently and pointed at a water bowl. It’s just a small, ceramic bowl that I fill with water but it’s very popular as you can see from this collection of videos. Watch for the eyes at the back near the fence at the start of the video.

I get a lot of pleasure from seeing wildlife in the garden but even more when I see them enjoying my hospitality. I think there’d be much less depression in the world if we thought less about ourselves and more about what we can do to help others, whether they be people or animals. Sometimes I think the young generation is overly focussed on themselves and it’s all about “me, me, me”. But if we stop thinking about ourselves and instead think about what we can do to help others like our community or the local wildlife then we get an enormous about of satisfaction and pleasure in return.

I just watched a very touching film called Black Dog about a man who befriends a dog. From the promo images, I expected it to be quite bleak, but it was very warm.

I do think, from what I have seen professionally, that the anxiety of the younger generation is fuelled by being encouraged (often by well meaning parents) to be too interior. I speak as someone who has been depressed, and has had an anxious child, and things that made it worse or better. I also think (as a volunteer for an animal education charity) that there is a lot of objectification of animals still, for all our reputation as an animal loving country. Eg the demand for specifically bred cats is rising, which is likely to cause more health conditions and inappropriate breeding conditions. With demands caused by people’s focus on themselves rather than the the needs of the animal.

Yes, I agree our reputation as an animal loving country isn’t always deserved. We’re too ready to cull wildlife rather than seek alternative solutions. Look at the badger cull which I think is appalling.
