The Fairy Pools, Isle of Skye

We visited the The Fairy Pools on the Isle of Skye today, as well as a couple of other places. I’ll let my photos tell the story.

The last time I visited the Isle of Skye was a little over 20 years ago. Back then there was no bridge; only a ferry.  I saw very little of Skye on that trip; only Portree because it was just a day trip.

The Isle of Skye is a beautiful place and worth visiting more than once and for longer than just a few hours. This part of the world gets 2m of rainfall per year so we made the most of some rare sunshine today and visited the Fairy Pools.

The Fairy Pools are pools of crystal clear, almost aqua/green water, in the River Brittle and surrounded by the jagged Black Cuillin mountains. It’s only about 5 or 10 minutes walk from the road to the start of the river. But if you want to follow the pools further then you can easily spend an hour or more there. I recommend doing that because the pools get better the further you walk.

Gumboots are handy if you want to walk in the water. The path is also muddy in places.

The water looks so inviting but it is freezing.

There were a lot of tourists there. I suspect it gets very crowded in summer and I would avoid it at that time of year, if possible. There isn’t enough parking at the pools and people park on the sides of what is already a very narrow road making it very difficult to pass cars going in the other direction. Many of the roads in this part of Scotland are also single track with passing places but motorists are very considerate.

We also stopped at Eilean Donan castle. I got rather excited by the webcam they have there until Ben pointed out that I was spending more time looking at myself on the webcam rather than at the actual castle. Nevertheless I did manage to take a screenshot of us on the webcam.

We woke up this morning to a delicious selection of chocolate courtesy of The Easter Bunny. However the children pointed out to us that the chocolate still had price tags on. The Easter Bunny must be outsourcing rather than making it in-house. Happy Easter everyone!
