Fish unaware of global warming hoax

Someone forgot to tell the world’s fish that global warming is a hoax as they are now responding to warmer waters by swimming to higher latitudes and greater depths. A study published in the journal of Nature this week finds, Signature of ocean warming in global fisheries catch.

The study measures the mean temperature of the catch which is a calculation based upon the average temperature preference of the species weighted by their annual catch. They found that this measure has been increasing by almost 0.2 degrees Celcius per decade from 1970 to 2006.

A study conducted in 2010 found that there will be winners and losers in the redistribution of global fish stocks. Under a high emission scenario, which is business as usual and our current trajectory, the catch potential in higher latitudes will increase by over 50%. However in the Indo-Pacific region of the tropics, the catch potential declines by 50% as does the Mediterranean Sea, The Red Sea and Antarctica.

As usual, the people who will be most affected by this are the poor coastal communities of the tropics. These are the people contributing least to the problem in the first place.

Yes there is no doubt that rising sea levels and the possibility of more turbulent weather will affect the millions of people who live right by the sea in tropical countries. And as you say, they have contributed little to the problem.

I think some people suspect Cheung at al 2013 is junk science .No hints but the initials WUWT might give a clue .I note that Cheung et al 2013 follows the earlier report in 2010 by Cheung and others! This paper is not as funny as the research by the University of NSW in 2009 that found the increase in ocean temperature of only 2 or 3 degrees could ” enrage sharks”,in Australian waters i.e. make them more aggressive. The research was admittedly conducted on damsel fish but I mean who knows with global warming.
Look, this last reference is from Australian Climate Madness,so maybe it’s a hoax!

So Cheung et al 2013 agrees with Cheung et al 2010? Well, that’s a surprise!
And from, The Voice of Russia this month:-

A little global cooling may be just over the horizon.
P.S. Could Putin be a global warming sceptic?

    Rachel,
Good news for at least one breed of coral reef fish! A new study in Global Change Biology,Miller et al,2013, finds increased CO2 dramatically stimulates breeding activity in cinnamon anemonefish on the Great Barrier Reef contrary to predictions of negative impacts on reproduction of many marine species by ocean acidification. The long term effects remain to be determined.
I’m learning more every day by following and checking your posts.Previously I knew nothing about Amphiprion melanopus!
